DAY OF REFLECTION

To begin the Day of Reflection, please join your palms together and recite the following with utmost sincerity: I, __________________, now recite the Gatha of Atonement. All evil karma ever committed by me since of old, Onaccount of my beginningless greed, anger, and ignorance. Born of my body, speech, and mind, Now I atone for it all. (Repeat 3x) Now being mindful of the purity of my body, speech, and mind, I commit myself to observing this Day of Reflection with the following practices: I, ________, take refuge in the Buddha, the awakened nature of all beings. I take refuge in the Dharma, the ocean of wisdom and compassion. I take refuge in the Sangha, the community of those living in harmony with all Buddhas and Dharmas. (Repeat 3x) I, ________, commit myself to not-knowing as the source of all manifestations, and to all manifestations as the teachings of not-knowing. I further commit myself to bearing witness by allowing myself to be touched by the joys and pain of the universe. Iinvite all hungry spirits into the mandala of my being and commit my energy and my love to the healing of myself, the earth, humanity, and all creations. 1. As awakened ones throughout all space and time have observed the precept of non-killing; not leading a harmful life nor encouraging others to do so, so will I, __________, with gratitude for the duration of this day, recognize that I am not separate from all that is. I will live in harmony with all life and the environment whichsustains it. 2. As awakened ones throughout all space and time have observed the precept of non-stealing, so will I, __________, with contentment for the duration of this day, be satisfied with what I have. I will freely give, ask for, and accept what is needed. 3. As awakened ones throughout all space and time have observed the precept of chaste conduct, so will I, ____________, with love for the duration of this day, encounter all creations with respect and dignity. I will give and accept love and friendship without clinging. 4. As awakened ones throughout all space and time have observed the precept of non-lying, speaking the truth and deceiving no one, so will I, ____________, with honesty for the duration of this day, listen and speak from the heart. I will see and act in accordance with what is. 5. As awakened ones throughout all space and time have observed the precept of not being deluded, nor encouraged others to do so, so will I, ____________, with awareness for the duration of this day, cultivate a mind that sees clearly. I will embrace all experience directly. 6. As awakened ones throughout all space and time have observed the precept of not talking about others errors and faults, so will I, ____________, with kindness for the duration of this day, unconditionally accept what each moment has to offer. I will acknowledge responsibility for everything in my life. 7. As awakened ones throughout all space and time have observed the precept of not elevating themselves and blaming others, so will I, ____________, with humility for the duration of this day, speak what I perceive to be the truth without guilt or blame. I will give my best effort and accept the results. 8. As awakened ones throughout all space and time have observed the precept of not being stingy, so will I, ____________, with generosity for the duration of this day, use all of the ingredients of my life. I will not foster a mind of poverty in myself or others. 9. As awakened ones throughout all space and time have observed the precept of not being angry, not harboring resentment, rage, or revenge, so will I, ____________, with determination for the duration of this day, transform suffering into wisdom. I will roll all negative experience into my practice. 10. As awakened ones throughout all space and time have observed the precept of not thinking ill of The Three Treasures, so will I, ____________, with compassion for the durationof this day, honor my life as an instrument of peacemaking. I will recognize myself and others as manifestations of the Oneness of Buddha, the Diversity of Dharma, and the Harmony of Sangha. RECITE AT CLOSE OF THE DAY OF REFLECTION The Transference of Merit I, ____________, have committed myself to this Day of Reflection. May the merits of this practice be extended to all those who dedicate their lives to the practice of peace and to all those who suffer from the oppression of my own greed, anger, and ignorance. I wish to transform the passions that afflict me and to realize and actualize the Buddha Way. I have taken refuge in the Buddha, I have taken refuge in the Dharma, I have taken refuge in the Sangha.
